Lilac in my garden. I should really get more of these.

Would you please explain to me how to get my lilac bushes to bloom? It's embarrassing! This is Portland for heaven's sake, I only get like 4 or 5 flowers on my 5 year old bushes... What am I doing wrong? I live for lilacs, and thought I could have a big lilac TREE like the ones I see in my neighborhood. Obviously, something is going dreadfully wrong pruning process...
I'm not sure what the secret is, but my lilac seems to like being in a very damp, almost swampy part of the yard. It is about 12 feet tall with around 2 dozen flowers, and I think it is about 8 years old.

That is gorgeous!
I've got two lilacs, but neither has bloomed yet, although the lilac and the rhododendron in the front are ready to bloom any day now.
